The Things I Almost Said

The weight of questions.

I almost said, “Does it even matter?”

But I learned that society sees things differently.

I almost said, “This makes no sense.”

But I know, for most people, it somehow does.

I almost said, “This is ridiculous.”

But I bit my tongue, knowing you might take offense.

I almost said, “I told you so.”

But I knew it wouldn’t change a thing.

I almost said, “Really? Don’t you see what’s happening?”

But I remembered — we never saw things the same way.

I almost said, “This isn’t the future I imagined.”

But faith tells me to remain patient.

I almost said, “Perhaps this is not the time.”

But my courage whispered — if not now, when?

I almost said, “Is silence complicity?”

But I was afraid of the weight of the answer.

I almost said, “Should I keep hoping?”

But I wondered if hope alone was sufficient.

I almost said, “Maybe history will repeat itself.”

But deep inside, I hoped it wouldn’t.

I almost said…

Nothing.

And that’s how it ended.
