Breakfast with the News: A Parent’s Dilemma

This morning, like always, I started my day with breakfast and scrolling through domestic and international news on my iPad. For someone like me, who is semi-retired, being able to savor a “slow breakfast” feels like an incredible blessing.

Life may not be as picture-perfect as those articles about an ideal old age often make it seem, but I’m truly grateful for where I am and what I have right now.

Since President Biden pardoned his son, Hunter Biden, on December 1st, the news — both at home and abroad — has been buzzing with debates about the decision. Analysts and commentators have examined it from every angle: politics, family, psychology, sociology, religion, and more. It also triggered debates on parental love and justice.

As a parent, reading all the pros and cons in the news reminds me of similar stories from Indonesia and other parts of the world — stories of parents facing tough choices when it comes to protecting their adult children. Different countries, cultures, and issues may exist, but the dilemma often feels the same.
